Liverpool is located in northwestern England. It has status of a city and is one of five boroughs of the metropolitan county Merseyside. Liverpool is one of England’s 10 largest cities with a population of over 400,000 people and an urban population of over 800,000 people. Liverpool is located along the River Mersey, which divides the city from the nearby Wirral Peninsula and which connects to the Irish Sea.

Liverpool has a solid growing economy consisting of various industries. The city has branches of major public sectors such as the National Health Service, Revenue and Customs and Home Office agencies such as the Criminal Records Bureau and the Identity and Passport Service.

Major financial companies operating in Liverpool are Barclays, JPMorgan, Abbey National, Alliance & Leicester, Royal Bank of Scotland Group, HBOS and the Bank of Ireland.

Liverpool is home to a large automobile industry, with the Halewood plant producing the British car models Jaguar X-type and Land Rover Freelander.

Liverpool has attracted the video game giant Playstation to create research and development facilities in the cities.

There are current plans to expand Liverpool’s port area. The Liverpool Waters is a multi billion pound project that aims to build major waterfront developments of businesses, offices, and residences. This plan is combined with the Wirral Waters, which hopes to do the same in the nearby Wirral Peninsula. Both projects are managed and proposed by the Peel Group company. The developments will take decades to complete and are expected to generate 10,000’s of jobs and pour billions of pounds into the Liverpool and surrounding economies. The port of Liverpool plays a major role in the city’s economy, as it is the seventh largest port by tonnage handled in the United Kingdom.

Liverpool is home to a solid retail industry. Bold Street is a major shopping area in the city renowned for its cafes and high street shops. Liverpool One is a multi purpose complex of retail, residence and shopping. The centre is divided into six districts that are lined with shops, cafes and leisure venues. The shopping sections are Hanover Street, Peter's Lane, Paradise Street, South John Street. The other two districts include a park and arrival location.

The Liverpool skyline is full of multiple skyscrapers. The tallest building is the residential/office West Tower, which has 40 floors and stands 140 metres tall.

Liverpool has an advanced transportation network to accommodate its residents and visitors. The Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the faster growing airport in Europe as it handles over 5 million passengers a year. The Liverpool Lime Street railway station offers local and long distance train service, including to London. There are multiple bus centres in Liverpool, including the local Queen Square Bus Station and Paradise Street Interchange, and the North Street Coach Station, which offers long distance service.

Football is the most popular sport in Liverpool with two teams in the English Premier League. Liverpool F.C. is one of the most successful clubs in English Football history. The team has had tremendous domestic success as well as major success in European competitions. The home ground of Liverpool F.C. is Anfield, a 45,500 capacity stadium. Everton F.C. is the Football second club in Liverpool and they play at the 40,500 capacity stadium Goodison Park.

Liverpool is home to three major higher education institutions, University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University, each serving more than 20,000 students, and Liverpool Hope University, serving about 8,000 students. Other notable schools include Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Liverpool Community College.

Liverpool is has a rich cultural identity. The city has earned international attention in the music category for producing The Beatles, a world famous pop/rock group. A large portion of Liverpool’s tourism industry is related to The Beatles. Liverpool is home to numerous theatres including Empire, Everyman, Neptune, Royal Court and Unity Theatres, and the Liverpool Playhouse. Some notable art galleries are Walker Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool.

Some major media operating in Liverpool includes newspapers Daily and Echo, and TV production company Lime Pictures.
